Helping CISOs Avoid Burnout and Reduce Risk

The CISO role is vital. The recent 2022 Global Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Survey from Heidrick & Struggles backs that up. The report notes that’s why CISO salaries have increased a lot over the recent years, which reflects their value and increased profile in their organizations.

However, the role comes with a high amount of stress and is at risk of burnout.

“What’s interesting about the CISO function is they’re getting tens of thousands of bad actors or threats every single day. And they need to be right every single time, whereas a bad actor only needs to be right once for something bad to happen within the company,” said Scott Thompson, a partner at Heidrick & Struggles who worked on the report.

CISOs have to bear the burden of high expectations from organizations that want to have little to no risk. That is compounded by the cyber workforce shortage and increase in threats.

Another stress factor is that the position of CISO is often a static one, according to the survey. 70% of respondents said their prior job was also a CISO or functionally filling that role. That means they typically make lateral hiring moves and rarely rise higher in an organization.

Unfortunately, if a CISO is overworked and stressed, it impacts more than their work/life balance. It increases the risk for the entire organization.

Leave your SOC training to Cloud Range

Cloud Range’s cyber range-as-a-service solutions help CISOs sleep better at night. Team-based simulation missions ensure security operations center (SOC) and incident response (IR) teams are proactively preparing and ready to respond to even the latest threats. Security teams can engage and collaborate as they defend against real-world attacks in our simulated, hyper-realistic environment. Because the cyberattack simulation exercises allow team members to licensed security tools and technologies, they are creating muscle memory and gaining situational awareness. That gives CISOs and security leaders confidence that the team is ready for real threats.

Mission debriefs give CISOs and security leaders metrics and analytics that are board-ready. The reports show measurable improvement in a security team's ability to detect and respond to cyberattacks — and THIS is what boards care about. Additionally, our experts provide leaders with deep insight into team and individual performance and prescribed next steps to grow technical and soft skills.

Cloud Range's FlexRange™ team missions are complemented by FlexLabs™ skills development, FastTrak™ Candidate Assessments, Tabletop 2.0 exercises, and more. Plus, we take on the administration, planning, and coordination, so CISOs can focus on other responsibilities.

Bottom line: Cloud Range works with leaders to outline and execute a security team training program that doesn’t add anything else to a CISO’s plate.
